Politics

Politics is for students who have a love of current affairs and debates.

Through our teaching we explore contemporary politics and the distribution of power in modern Britain, as well as political concepts, values and ideologies.

A Level

Politics is taught at A Level, though younger pupils are encouraged to get involved via the Junior Politics Society which nurtures scholarship by providing a forum for the discussion on contemporary issues.

In the Lower Eighth, the A level course covers the British political system and political ideologies. In the upper eighth, pupils study either the American political system or Global Politics. The A level syllabus is complemented by popular student-led societies like Polecon, ad hoc events like mock elections, and regular visiting speakers.

Competitions

Pupils are encouraged to enter external essay competitions, where Paulines often find success. The Humanities Faculty also holds the John Gritten Prize, an essay competition focused on international relations.

Trips

The lower eighth visit Parliament and Whitehall to complement their studies of British politics. Other trips take us further afield: in October 2024 we spent ten days in the USA, visiting Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina before finishing it Atlanta, Georgia, just a few days before the election.

Politics and Economics Society

The joint Politics and Economics Society (Polecon) is renowned for its weekly speakers and is run by an executive committee of Upper Eighth students.
