Athletics round-up

Lord Burghley Trophy at Eton College

On a wonderful afternoon of athletics which saw Eton retain the ‘Burghley Bucket’, the overall standard of the performances on show was very high, cementing the status of this competition as the premier athletics event on the school calendar. Despite some last minute changes, the SPS senior team finished a creditable fourth out of the eight schools attending, made up of Eton, Harrow, Tonbridge, Epsom, Brighton College, Charterhouse and Marlborough College.

There were individual wins for Sol Inglis (Upper Eighth) and Max Bishop (Upper Eighth) over 400m; Cam McConnon (Lower Eighth) in the 1500mB along with a second place in the 800mA – both in personal best times; Leau Roch (Fourth Form) in the junior 800mA; and finally Benjy Street (Lower Eighth) who took a comfortable win in the 2000m steeplechase before coming back to win a tight 1500m race on the line. The focus for the remainder of the season shifts from team to individual, with athletes vying for qualification times and distances for the English Schools Championships in July.

Surrey County Championships

Leau Roch finished 4th in the Surrey U15 1500m championships on Sunday, taking a huge chunk off his personal best in the process, with a time of 4min 21.01. He is now just over 1 second from the qualifying time for the English Schools Championships.
